On Jun 17th 2019, David Johnson, president and medical director of Wilderness Medical Associates International (WMAI)  talked to medical students and residents at School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of University of Campinas (Unicamp). WMAI is one of the lead Wilderness First Aid providers in North America, currently teaching over 10.000 students around the globe every year. Founded in the mid 80’s WMAI teaches wilderness first aid to lay people who recreate and work outdoors but also to medical practitioners who may be interested in/acting as a medical provider in outdoor adventures/expeditions, remote environments and limited resources.

David is retired from work in the emergency department in Portland, ME, USA, and has pursued a variety of outdoor activities in his lifetime. He came to Brasil to teach a WALS® (Wilderness Advanced Life Support) course for medical practitioners and he spent the day in Campinas talking about wilderness medicine, WMAI’s approach to teaching and discussed a handful of problems that can happen in the wilderness and how to manage them with limited resources. Dr. David was received by Prof. Gustavo P. Fraga, Chief of Division of Trauma Surgery and Coordinator of International Office of SMS - Unicamp.
