The  University of Campinas (Unicamp) School of Medical Sciences (SMS) and Emergency Unit center of the Clinical Hospital (HC) Unicamp welcomed the student Júlia Macedo Lopes during the months of March and April 2022. She is currently in the 4th year of Medical School in Germany, at the TUM (Technische Universität München) and came to Brazil for an internship in both the Division of Trauma Surgery (DCT) and Psychiatry units.

When asked about her experience, Júlia reported: “First aid centers can be scary, especially reference centers like the one of Unicamp, which not only receives emergencies from Campinas, but also from the whole region. The clock doesn’t stop and there are tons and tons of patients to be taken care of. When I arrived there, Dr. Bortoto told me right away to put on a scrub and follow him, the interns, and the residents. It is so important to feel, from day one, included and embraced on a team. During one of our conversations, he told me that the teachers from FCM take their students under their wings and “hug” them. But what does “to hug” mean in this context? I learned it means to teach with kindness and empathy. For that – but for also the whole internship experience - I am more than thankful. Beyond the excellency of both theorical methods and procedures I learned, I had the chance to see humanized care at all levels.”

This internship was only possible thanks to Prof. Gustavo Fraga and the SMS - Unicamp International Office. Those interested in doing a practical, non-observative internship (in German: Famulatur) in this hospital can contact gtifcm@unicamp.br.
