Brenno Salvadori Sontag, current 4th year medical resident of the Division of Diseases of the Digestive System of School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of University of Campinas (Unicamp), spent 30 days last August at an elective internship with experienced surgeon Dr. André F. Teixeira, Head of Bariatric Surgery at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, a hospital owned by Orlando Health, in Orlando, Florida, USA.

This American institution is highly respected nationally, consisting of 8 hospitals and rehabilitation centers, 2,900 physicians and more than 20,000 employees, providing medical care to nearly 2 million residents in central Florida and 10,000 international visitors annually.

As part of the internship, Brenno accompanied Dr. André's team in outpatient consultations, lectures, endoscopic and surgical procedures, about 90% of which were performed with the help of da Vinci Xi, a new generation of robotic technology developed to improve aspects surgical treatment seeking evolution in the postoperative results of the patients.

Responsible for the cultural and professional exchange between Unicamp and the American hospital, the resident was very pleased and enthusiastic about the 30 days spent abroad, unique experience of broad contact with modern technologies, which are still little known in Brazil.

Andre F. Teixeira, MD, is a board-certified bariatric physician for Orlando Health Physicians Bariatric and Laparoscopy Center. Dr. Teixeira completed his undergraduate studies in biology at Augusta State University and earned his medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. He completed his internship in general surgery at Orlando Regional Medical Center and his residency training at Orlando Health, where he also served as general surgery chief resident. He performed his bariatric and advanced minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic in Florida. Dr. Teixeira has been published in multiple journals including The Obesity Journal, Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases and The American Surgeon. He also has published several book chapters. He has presented at many international and national conferences on various topics relating to general surgery and bariatric surgery. Dr. Teixeira is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the American society of metabolic and bariatric surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Morehouse School of Medicine Chapter, the American Medical Student Association and the Morehouse School of Medicine Chapter.
