Laura Marie Eckardt Antunes, a 5th-year medical student from Technische Universität München (TUM), recently concluded a four-month internship at the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of Unicamp, which took place from September to December 2024. During this period, she gained experience in various departments at the Clinical Hospital (HC) and the Laboratory for Cancer Genetics (LAGECA).

Reflecting on her internship, Laura shared her thoughts:

“I had the opportunity to undertake a four-month internship at the HC, rotating through departments such as oncology, immunology, ophthalmology, neurology, and hematology. I shadowed doctors in both inpatient and outpatient settings, observed surgeries, and even engaged in the research environment.

Unicamp is one of the top universities in Latin America, and its reputation is well-deserved. It was an incredible experience to work alongside experts and to learn about many rare and, at times, unusual diseases. Coming from Europe, I encountered clinical presentations I had never seen or heard of before, making the experience all the more enriching.

The most remarkable part of my internship was being part of the team at the Laboratory for Cancer Genetics. When I started my rotation in oncology, I asked to learn more about the research in this field. Oncology is one of the fastest-evolving areas of medicine, so it made perfect sense to explore its research aspect. The team at LAGECA welcomed me warmly, offering incredible support and guidance, which deepened my knowledge of the field. Beyond that, I formed friendships that I hope will last long after I return to Germany.

I am deeply grateful for the kindness and support I received from so many wonderful people. This experience has not only expanded my professional knowledge and skills but also enriched me personally. Thanks to my supportive and encouraging colleagues and professors, I had the chance to participate in classes, symposiums, and congresses. My time at Unicamp was unforgettable. Thank you!”

Professor Carmem Lima, leader of LAGECA, added:

“Foreign students and researchers bring a fresh perspective to research, shaped by the experiences and cultures of their countries of origin. They also foster connections with researchers from their home institutions, facilitating the development of collaborative projects.”
