He was an excellent digestive surgical resident up to 2015. Three years ago he moved to Birmingham, United Kingdom, to work and prepare his PhD. Boin to present a conference during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Gastrocentro Unicamp.

Mortality rates on the waiting list for liver transplantation worldwide are close to 20%. This is driven by a growing discrepancy between donor organ availability and the increasing transplant waiting lists. As a result, the acceptance of donors with extended criteria has grown in many countries. However, acceptance of these donors leads to a high risk of post-transplant complications. Strategies to tackle this conundrum and increase safely donor organ utilization are urgently needed. Ex situ machine perfusion of the liver has emerged as a promising option for preservation of donor organs prior to transplantation.

Yuri said: “This highly relevant topic has been my subject of research and the theme of my PhD at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. It was a great pleasure to meet you all again and present my work. Looking forward to the next opportunity”.
