Sarah Kirchner and Carla Seidl, students from the Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, completed internships at the School of Medical Sciences (SMS) of Unicamp. Both gained experience in the Neurology department from September 23rd to October 20th.

“My one-month internship in Campinas was an incredible experience that exceeded all my expectations. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with open arms. The healthcare professionals in the neurology department, along with those in neurosurgery and neuropathology, were genuinely engaged in teaching us and ensuring we got the most out of our time. Their passion for their work was inspiring, and everyone in the department took the time to explain procedures, demonstrate techniques, and share their insights into the field. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn about a different healthcare system and observe the unique challenges present in Brazil. This experience broadened my understanding of neurology and the collaborative spirit within the medical community”, said Sarah, about the clinical experience.

“Beyond the internship, Brazil captivated us with its stunning landscapes. We took full advantage of our weekends, exploring various cities and islands. Each day was filled with new experiences, and I return home with not only more medical knowledge but also cherished memories and new friends. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making this an unforgettable experience!”, added the student.

“From the very beginning, the whole team welcomed me warmly. The professors and residents were incredibly friendly and hospitable, taking the time to explain cases thoroughly and ensuring I understood each one. Communicating through WhatsApp simplified many aspects, from organizing daily schedules to staying in touch with the team. One of the highlights of my stay was being invited to attend a 3-day neurology congress, which was an amazing experience. During my time there, I encountered several rare neurological conditions that I hadn’t seen before, which significantly broadened my medical knowledge. The organization of the elective was smooth and free of complications, making the experience even more enjoyable”, spoke Carla.

She also spoke about Brazilian culture and the experience as a whole. “The culture and mentality in Brazil were very welcoming, and I felt at home from the start. I also had time to travel on weekends, allowing me to explore Brazil and gain a deeper appreciation for the country. I always felt very safe in Campinas, and the professors gave me great tips and recommendations on what to see and where to go. Overall, I learned a great deal—not only about neurology but also about the local culture. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and would recommend this elective to anyone considering a clinical experience abroad.”
